Title:3D Proficiency Scales: Clarity for Integrated Learning Performances (P125)
Description:To achieve the vision of the Framework, teaching and learning must integrate all three dimensions of the NGSS. With the support of the Carnegie Corporation, the Museum of Science and Industry developed the teacher professional development course "Foundations of NGSS Curriculum Alignment" which included a protocol for unpacking the NGSS and creating 3D lesson-level objectives or Learning Performances. Clarity of learning intentions has a large effect size on learning and so we developed a process for creating lesson-level 3D Proficiency Scales, based on the work of Marzano. Formative assessment, feedback, and backward design are all enhanced by proficiency scales but the expectation of students using SEP and CCC to understand DCI creates unique challenges for NGSS proficiency scale design. This session will provide an overview of the unpacking protocol and the process of creating the proficiency scales which describe success criteria for integrated, 3D lesson-level performances.
