Abstract Details (PID = P121)
Title:Planting roots with the next generation: A podcast to engage students in STEM careers (P121)
Description:Plant science, horticulture, and conservation are important STEM fields, yet there is a decline in the future workforce of students with the necessary knowledge and expertise to fill many of these positions. In order to engage the next generation of plant STEM professionals and to introduce them to plant science related topics, The Morton Arboretum created the podcast, "Planted: Finding your Roots in STEM Careers." By creating an initial nine-episode season investigating the career journeys of scientists, horticulturalists, and researchers from around the globe, "Planted" presents high school and college-age students with case studies on how to work in fields like Genetics, Horticulture, Ethnopharmacology, and Conservation. Each episode features different guests and has supplemental digital material available for download for listeners to further explore including homework/classroom assignments aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). These materials deepen the impact of each podcast episode by assisting educators in crafting lesson content relevant to each episode topic
