Title:How Paleoclimatology Can Transform Your Climate Change Lessons (P114)
Description:In August of this year, House Bill 4895 passed and the state of Illinois became the 5th state in the nation to require climate change education in public schools. This presentation will help science teachers create more effective climate change curricula with an NGSS-aligned lesson that connects climate research to geology and chemistry as well as introduce an exciting opportunity for further climate change professional development. Participants will learn about the benefits of including climate proxy data and paleoclimatology concepts into their climate change lessons. An interactive lesson will be introduced that allows students to collect ancient climate data by evaluating concentrations of oxygen isotopes from ice core samples. In addition to paleoclimate education resources, participants will learn about a free professional development program where teachers can spend a week learning about ice core science and climate change education for graduate credit. This program was developed by American Meteorological Society and COLDEX, which is the team that is searching for the oldest ice core sample in Antarctica.
