Title:FS: Developing Inclusive, Three-Dimensional Physical Science Classrooms (Grades 6-12) (F305)
Description:How can we develop classroom communities where all student ideas are supported, leveraged, and valued? The Framework for Inclusive, Three-dimensional (3D) Science Classrooms was developed by integrating research on equitable classroom pedagogies and 3D instruction, and can be used by teachers of any experience level to plan, reflect on, and revise 3D instruction to meet the needs of their students. The framework supports teachers in 1) positioning students as knowledge generators, 2) eliciting, valuing and leveraging funds-of-knowledge, 3) encouraging use and sharing of student language,4) valuing students' lived experiences as evidence, and 5) promoting use of students' critical lens to solve problems. In this presentation, participants will engage with phenomena in physical science, and examine relevant student work from two classrooms: an urban, midwestern high school, and a urban, southwestern high school. Participants will discuss strategies for developing inclusive environments, and ways to increase opportunities in science for all learners.
