Abstract Details (PID = F301)
Title:FS: Everyday Rocket Science & Space Exploration (F301)
Description:The phrase 'rocket science' has commonly been used as a metaphor to describe problems which are supposed to be difficult, and yet the video game 'Kerbal Space Program' has made huge chunks of 'rocket science' into gameplay elements. Not only have kids of all ages learned to understand and solve these problems within the environment of a game, but the experience has set many of them on the paths to future careers. Working with the game as a base I'll explain some of the science of spaceflight, talk about how this game and similar experiences can be used as environments for learning, and how video games have even helped solve actual scientific problems.
