Abstract Details (PID = P201)
Title:My Life of Adventure as a Manager at NASA with the ISS (P201)
Description:Ryan L. Prouty is the manager of the Mission Integration and Operations Office for the International Space Station Program. She leads the organization that defines the launch sequence of all vehicles to the international orbiting laboratory, what science experiments and supplies will fill those vehicles, and what the crew will accomplish with those supplies and throughout their stay onboard. Up until the Fall of 2015, she worked directly for the Program Manager leading the effort to reengineer the ISS program in order for it to better meet its vision of enabling science discovery and fostering commercial enterprise in space. The initiative, Revolutionize ISS for Science and Exploration, is a monumental culture change initiative, the likes of which rarely if ever occurs in a government agency. She initiated a paradigm shift for the people in the program from values and norms required for building a space vehicle, to values and norms required to enable science discovery and viable commerce in Low Earth orbit. Prior to this position, she led multiple teams of highly skilled mid-level managers: one that directed failure recovery activities for onboard vehicle system failures through the completion of the shuttle program and assembly of the station and another that managed research integration activities for the ISS science compliment. Through her career, she has been awarded the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal as well as two Exceptional Achievement Medals, two highly regarded awards in the Agency; in addition to a Silver Snoopy and two Space Flight Achievements for individual and team accomplishments. She began her career in 1997 as a Communications and Tracking Officer where she logged thousands of hours as the sole operator monitoring ISS performance on orbit. She holds a BS in mathematics from the University of Wyoming; the same state where she was raised. She is often asked what prompted her to move from such beautiful country to Houston, TX; her only response is the passion to be part of something greater than herself. The only thing that can compare to living in Wyoming is one day discovering a cure or developing a technology to improve life for all humanity on or off our planet.
