Abstract Details (PID = P178)
Title:Biotechnology: Developing a Semester Long Course (P178)
Description:Engaging students in biotechnology is critical for the application of biology. Students gain 21st century skills and an understanding of current practices being implemented in the biotechnology industry. The goal of biotechnology is to improve the quality of life through the engineering of cells and the use of biology, chemistry, and engineering. During development of this type of course issues may arise. How do you handle ethics questions that often stem from misinformation or lack of understanding, funding concerns, and space concerns? What resources exist for both students and teachers? How can local colleges, universities, and school districts collaborate in the development and implementation processes? These are some of the issues that will be discussed as I share my experience with setting up a semester long biotechnology course.
