Abstract Details (PID = P170)
Title:Grades Stink, Learning Rules: Shifting the Focus to Empower Students (P170)
Description:How often do students need to see their grades? How effective are grades at telling students how much they have learned? How can we keep at-risk students from giving up? Using the device of their choice, attendees will play games to delve into current research about getting and keeping students engaged. The goal of this session is to shift student focus to learning, rather than on getting more points. Attendees will explore the concept behind why I provide my students with feedback on their work but not a grade during the learning process. Attendees will interact with various forms of formative assessment, descriptive feedback and explore the notion of retaking assessments. Additionally, attendees will come away with easy-to-implement strategies that will result in positive outcomes for all types of students.
