Abstract Details (PID = P151)
Title:Learning from Hank's Mistakes in Science Class (P151)
Description:In this interactive presentation, we demonstrate how a fictitious student (Hank) and his collaborative group members overcome chemistry misconceptions, misunderstandings, gaps in knowledge, etc. Through the use of daily bellringers that are aligned to specific learning standards, we write scenarios wherein Hank puts his misconceptions and misunderstandings on display. These lead to non-threatening and less intimidating conversations in which our own students engage and thereby come to greater self-awareness of their conceptual understanding. Hank's follies also provide an opportunity to discuss appropriate and expected learning behaviors (SEL), prepare for AP free response questions, and utilize the NGSS science and engineering practices. Participants will have an opportunity to engage in conversations as our students do and think about how to write your own scenarios for your own learning objectives in any subject.
