Title:Training Teachers to Introduce Quantum Information Science in K-12 Classrooms (P150)
Description:Quantum Information Science (QIS) is a rapidly developing field using the laws of quantum physics to manipulate information. QIS is very likely to impact society in significant ways. To aid in the development of this field it is important to start introducing QIS in K-12 classrooms, this provides a larger pool of students the opportunity to learn about the field so they can become future leaders in QIS. To achieve this, teachers have to be given resources to introduce QIS in the classroom. With this goal in mind, Fermilab hosted a QIS Institute in Summer 2023. Over four weeks we had six K-12 teachers learn the basics of QIS. The teachers created materials to introduce QIS concepts in their classrooms, which are to be implemented in the 2023-2024 school year. In this presentation we give an overview of the 2023 QIS Institute and the materials developed, alongside testimonials and student first impressions of QIS content.
