Title:Reconciling external content standards with engaging students in experiential/active learning. (P140)
Description:How can I get my students outside "to do science", but still have them do well on the test? Our presentation will discuss several ways to answer that question based on recent research studies and our own personal experiences instructing students from college prep through AP. We have found and there is substantial research that shows how experiential/active learning practices allows for deeper student understanding of course concepts. Our presentation will provide specific examples ranging from a one-day bio blitz neighborhood biodiversity study to multi-class period experiences where students generate or analyze scientific data from their neighborhood or your local Forest Preserve District. Finally, we will discuss ways to include active learning strategies in your classroom in spite of geographic, class period length, and/or financial constraints.
