Title: | If You Grow It, They Will Come: Lessons from the Oldest Student-Grown Prairie in the USA (P139) |
Description: | The most common environmental-related question asked by students is, "How can I make an impact?" Amongst a sea of bleak environmental news, climate anxiety is a real & growing issue. A concrete classroom program shows students how to impact their environment. Prairie restoration is one such concrete answer & students can experience tangible results over the course of one school year. Teach your students to grow native species from seed & do more than just alleviate climate anxiety: open your classroom to otherwise abstract lessons or lessons that would require a bus. Watch students accept the responsibility of caring for plants over the course of months & learn that not everything has to succeed for something to be successful. The prairie itself becomes a land lab where real-world science happens. Getting started is not hard. A little knowledge, a desire to learn, and space to plant is all you need. |
